details
The transfer via SWIFT (Society for Worldwide Interbank Financial Telecommunication) is a financial transaction between two banks in different countries. The money is not sent physically but virtually based on a message sent from one bank to another. This way, you can send money anywhere in the world in a different currency.
For example, if you want to transfer money to a friend in the United States, you only need to know his account and bank. Based on this information, maib will send a message to the U.S. bank. The bank debits the money to your friend's account as soon as the message is received.
How to transfer money to a bank account via SWIFT?
- Come to any unit with your I.D. card and open a current account in the transfer currency;

Cancellation/return of a money transfer sent via SWIFT
Cancellation of a money transfer via SWIFT can be performed only by the bank operator and only at the maib unit where the operation was carried out, but provided that the money was not transferred to the beneficiary's account. For this:
- You approach the MAIB unit with a valid identity card;
- Present the payment order in foreign currency to the operator and inform him that you want to cancel the transfer;
- Fill in the request to cancel the transfer via SWIFT and deposit the amount of the transfer cancellation fee in the current account, amounting to EUR 30 (depending on the currency of the transfer).
Please note that:
- The transfer can only be canceled with the consent of the beneficiary. For this reason, we recommend that you have the beneficiary's consent before initiating the procedure for cancelling the transfer.
- Following banking practices, the amount of the returned transfer is lower due to the fees charged by the beneficiary bank and the corresponding banks.

frequent questions
All banks interconnected through the SWIFT network receive an identification code made up of 8 or 11 characters. This means that when sending money abroad, you need to know the SWIFT or BIC code, as it is also called, of the bank where the transfer is being made.
The first four characters of the SWIFT code indicate the bank's name, the next two represent the country's international code, and the last ones indicate the locality's code. If the code contains 11 characters, the final ones represent a specific branch of the bank.
- To receive money from abroad, you must provide the SWIFT code to the sender. This code is usually indicated on any bank statement, but you can also request it at any maib branch.
- To make a transfer, you will also need the SWIFT code, which you can request from the beneficiary or find online. For example, you can use the Wise platform to identify and verify the SWIFT code needed for the transfer.
The processing time of a SWIFT transfer is primarily influenced by the time of initiation and the currency used for the transfer. Transfers in euros within the Single Euro Payments Area (SEPA) are typically faster than those in other currencies, which may take 1 to 3 days, with some transfers potentially requiring up to 5 days. To expedite the process, initiating the transfer earlier in the day is recommended.
When making an international money transfer, the final cost depends on the sum of the three fees charged: the maib bank fee, the SWIFT fee, and the correspondent bank fee. For the correspondent bank fee, you have the option to choose how to share the costs between you and the recipient, as there are three options:
- OUR option – the fee is covered by the person initiating the transfer;
- SHA option - the fee is shared between the sender and the recipient;
- BEN option – the fee is covered by the recipient.
SEPA (Single Euro Payments Area) is a payment system used for euro-based, cashless transactions, available in EU member countries and a few other states (Switzerland, Norway, and Liechtenstein).
Through SEPA, euro payments within Europe are processed faster and more easily.
