Moldova - on the agenda at the EBRD 2024 Annual Meeting and Business Forum in Yerevan, Armenia

Maib management was part of the delegation representing the Republic of Moldova at the Annual Meeting of the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development, entitled "Delivering Impact Together", between May 14 and 16, 2024. This significant annual event brings together industry experts, business leaders, and EBRD members to discuss the development of the economy in various regions and share development perspectives.

Topics such as trade facilitation with the European Union, sustainability issues in business and the green economy, digitisation, and digital solutions in business were addressed comprehensively on the first day of the event.

EBRD awarded maib under the Trade Facilitation Programme

At the award ceremony under the Trade Facilitation Program, the EBRD awarded maib the "Most Active Issuing Bank in Moldova in 2023". This prestigious award recognises the bank's ongoing commitment to supporting international trade activity in the local market and the outstanding results achieved under the TFP - Trade Facilitation Program. Specifically, only in 2023, under the EBRD Trade Facilitation Programme, maib issued documentary transactions for customers (counter-guarantees and stand-by letters of credit) amounting to 2 830 000 EUR.

Moldova Investment Outlook, a discussion panel dedicated to the investment potential of the Republic of Moldova

On May 16, the agenda of the EBRD meeting included a discussion panel dedicated to the Republic of Moldova and its investment potential. The panel was moderated by Catarina Bjorlin Hansen, Director of the EBRD Office in Moldova and was attended by:

  • Dumitru Alaiba, Minister of Economic Development and Digitalization
  • Diana Jablonska, DG NEAR
  • Natalia Bejan, Director of the Investment Agency of the Republic of Moldova
  • Giorgi Shagidze, CEO of maib
  • Carolina Bugaian, Director of Moldcell
  • Veaceslav Panfil, Director of Endava.

During the panel, Giorgi Shagidze, CEO of maib, related the development of the mobile banking app and multiple digital banking services such as biometrics, which makes the customer experience simpler and easier, which is possible also thanks to the digital infrastructure developed by the Government and the availability of high-level connectivity in the country. The Minister of Economic Development and Digitalization, Dumitru Alaiba, mentioned that about 60% of public services for entrepreneurs are now online, to reach 75% by the end of the year and the mission - a 100% digital future. At the same time, the importance of developing the capital market for attracting investment was highlighted, as well as the value of one of the country's primary resources - human capital. During the panel, Diana Jablonska, DG NEAR, reiterated the EU's support for Moldova's European course.
