Chisinau City Hall, Mastercard and Moldova Agroindbank launched cashless payment for public transport travel in the capital

Passengers on five key trolleybus and bus routes in Chisinau can now pay  contactless for their travel. Mobile terminals for accepting card payments have appeared in all 110 vehicles on the routes.

Chisinau City Hall, Mastercard and Moldova Agroindbank have launched the first solution in Moldova to accept cashless payments for urban transport travel. Capital residents and guests can now pay quickly and without cash for travel on trolleybus routes 22, 23, 24 and 30, as well as on buses running on routes 2 and 5. All 110 vehicles on the routes are equipped with mobile terminals, available from the conductors. Passengers can pay for their journey via such a terminal using a contactless card from any bank in Moldova and the world, issued by various payment systems, or a device with contactless payment function.

"Today we are launching the first large-scale pilot project - in 110 transport units we are implementing electronic payment. I would like to thank our partners - Mastercard and Moldova Agroindbank, who helped make this project possible, as well as my colleagues at the City Hall, Urban Bus Park and CETD. We want all public transport to offer the option of electronic payment and to increase the number of public transport units in the capital. I hope that the Chisinau residents and capital guests will enjoy the new payment functionalities by simply touching their card, phone or watch equipped with NFC technology”, said Ion Ceban, General Mayor of Chisinau municipality.

The project is made possible thanks to the technical and financial support of Mastercard and Moldova Agroindbank. For the partners, the project is the first step under the Memorandum of Strategic Cooperation, which was signed by Mastercard and Chisinau City Hall in January 2021.

"As part of the "smart city" concept, Mastercard is introducing contactless payments worldwide, where speed, convenience, payment security and contact minimisation are particularly important. Cashless payments in public transport is an innovation designed to make life more convenient and a response to current consumer demand: according to our research, 40% of Moldovans would like to pay for their journey specifically by card. In addition, 88% of retail payments in Moldova using Mastercard cards are already contactless, which indicates a persistent trend and a high popularity of the technology. We are convinced that the residents and guests of the city will appreciate the solution and it will become a strong boost for the development of cashless payments in the country", said Yuriy Batkhin, Vice President of Business Development for Mastercard in Ukraine and Moldova.

The payment process is simple. The passenger simply puts the contactless bank card or device with contactless payment function close to the terminal and waits for the signal tone. The payment process takes a few seconds. Once the payment is confirmed, the terminal will print a receipt with information about the cost, date and time of travel. The cost of the journey is MDL 2 for trolleybus routes and MDL 3 for bus routes. There are no additional charges for non-cash payments.

In addition, it is also possible to pay for the journey in cash: after receiving the money from the passenger, the conductor makes the payment on the mobile terminal with his special card and issues a receipt. Similarly, the conductor has a special card for recording low-fare journeys: the driver brings this card close to the terminal and issues the receipt to the passenger who presents the low-fare card..
Moldova Agroindbank is the bank-acquirer of the project.

„The development of the payment infrastructure is one of the strategic objectives of Moldova Agroindbank, as a bank we are oriented to bring convenience and speed to our customers' lives. In 2021 we intend to move towards digitization and bring our services and products closer to people.  We are pleased that MAIB is the first bank in Moldova to implement cashless payments in the public transport infrastructure, thus contributing to the development and technologization of the capital in the context of the smart city concept. We believe that the implementation of modern technologies in the banking sector in everyday life will contribute to the simplification of people's daily life and increase the level of comfort", emphasized Aliona Stratan, First Deputy Chairwoman of the Management Board of Moldova Agroindbank.

The project plans to equip the transport with stationary terminals, which will allow the acceptance of payments for travel via contactless cards and devices with contactless payment function, without the involvement of conductors.
