Study case: how incubators help entrepreneurs grow their businesses

The world of entrepreneurship can be full of challenges and obstacles on the road to success. As mentioned in our previous article on What business incubators are, they guide and support growing entrepreneurial initiatives. These innovation hubs provide essential physical space, resources, and mentorship, creating an environment conducive to developing and strengthening early-stage businesses.

Find out in this article about the role business incubators play in their development from Tatiana Bucos, Director of the Pro-business Services and Education Center "SMARTLab ASEM" and coordinator of the ASEM Business Incubator, who is both a trainer and mentor, contributing to the training and professional development of young entrepreneurs. The article is developed within the financial and entrepreneurial education project maib edu.

Incubators help start-up businesses by facilitating access to resources such as office and production space, specialised techniques and technologies, mentoring and advice, access to networks of investors, and sometimes even seed funding. In some cases, incubators can provide legal, accounting and marketing services to beneficiaries, reducing the administrative burden and allowing entrepreneurs to focus on product development and business growth.

To better understand how the resources offered by business incubators contribute to the development of start-up businesses, we will take an example. Suppose a young person wants to launch a mobile health and fitness app. How can a business incubator help them?

After being accepted into a business incubator, the youth receives access to the following resources:

  • workspace and resources: the incubator provides him with office space and access to essential facilities such as internet, printers, and meeting rooms;
  • mentoring and consultancy: the young person is paired with a mentor who has experience in technology and/or healthcare, who guides them on product development, market strategy and operational challenges;
  • workshops and training: the young person attends seminars and training sessions organised by the incubator, where they learn about marketing, finance and legal aspects of running a business;
  • networking: the incubator introduces the youth to its network, connecting them with potential investors, partners and customers;
  • access to funding: the young person receives help in preparing presentations to investors and can access funding through the incubator's funding programmes or its network;
  • collaboration with other incubator residents: in addition to the support received directly from the incubator, the young person can benefit enormously from interacting with other entrepreneurs in the incubator by exchanging ideas and experiences, developing partnerships and collaborations, and providing emotional and motivational support.

Through the services offered and access to the above-mentioned resources, incubators increase the chances of long-term business success.

Incubators are catalysts for start-up success. By providing an ecosystem of resources, mentoring and networking, they become indispensable partners for young entrepreneurs. Thus, through their services and access to a wide range of facilities, incubators simplify the path to success and contribute significantly to the consolidation and prosperity of early-stage businesses. A partnership with an incubator thus becomes an investment in the future of entrepreneurship and sustainable economic development.
